- Vocabulary is 25% of the writing and speaking grade.
- If you don't know the vocabulary, you might not be able to find the answers in the listening or reading tests.
- If you don't know how to spell words, you won't get the mark in the listening or reading test.
So, make sure when you find or learn a new word, record it in your vocabulary book and keep looking at it and testing yourself. It is unlikely that you will remember a word just by hearing it or reading it once. Keep going back to it.
Some ideas for remembering:
- Stick the words on post-it notes around the house - you could write your translation on one side and the English word on the other, or the definition on one side and the English on the other.
- Write the word again and again until you can write it without looking.
- Try to write it in some sentences and get them checked by your teacher or tutor.
- Take your vocabulary book with you everywhere and keep reading it and reading it.
- Draw a picture you associate with the word - some people remember things through images.
