- Names to beliefs/ claims/ inventions
- Periods of time to events
- Nationalities/ groups/ countries to events
In this type of question you have to SCAN - scanning involves moving your eyes over the text in order to look for a specific word. It does NOT involve reading the text. This is a difficult technique at first and one that needs practice. When looking for names/ countries/ places scanning is made easier because you can search for capital letters, which might be easier to see.
An approach for this type of question might be:
1 Read the question to make sure you are clear what it is asking you to do. In this example, you have to choose one letter from A-F. Note that there will always be more options than questions so you will never use all of them. Also, the question might tell you that you can use each letter more than once.
2 Read all the questions, underlining the key words and thinking of possible synonyms that might appear in the text.
3 Read the names/ nationalities/ periods of time in the box.
4 Move to the text and scan for the first name/ nationality/ period of time. When you find it, underline it.
5 Read around it (usually the sentence before and after) and read the questions again to see if any match. If they do, write the letter of that name/ nationality/ period of time on your answer sheet.
6 Move to the next name/ nationality/ period of time in the box and scan again in the text. Note that in this type of question, the answers do not usually come in order so you may have to search before or after the answer you have already found.
7 Keep going like this and crossing out the options as you use them. As always, if you cannot find the answer, make a guess - NEVER leave a blank.
