So, how can we approach this differently instead of wasting all of our time and losing confidence in the first task? The answer - ignore it! At least for a while anyway. Do not even attempt it - move to the next block of questions, which might be a True/ False/ Not Given or a Multiple Choice - these types of questions require you to scan the text for specific information. When you are scanning the text, keep in mind that you need to come back to the headings question. If, whilst you are scanning, you notice that the first paragraph has a definite topic, circle the key word; or, if you notice the third paragraph repeats the same word three times, circle it, underline it or do something that will help you to locate it again afterwards. When you are scanning for the specific information in the second or third block of questions you will come to get a better idea of the text and have a rough idea of what each paragraph is about.
Then, when you go back to the headings question, you may be able to match headings to paragraphs without even really looking back at the text because you have become familiar with it or because you have circled those key words/ ideas already. This approach can save you so much time and can lead to more accuracy in your answers. Do not forget to cross out the headings as you go to help your eyes to focus on the headings that remain.
