PASSIVE SENTENCES
SEQUENCE MARKERS
Of course, NOT every sentence should be written in the passive but at least some. You need to show 'variety' in your grammar so you should have a mixture of both passive and active. The passive is important when you are describing a process because often you do not know who is doing the action and so you need to use the passive form. It is also considered to be formal and academic language.
Example: The process is divided
PASSIVE = OBJECT + FORM OF BE + MAIN VERB IN THE 3RD FORM
Sequence markers help the reader to understand the process you are describing and when each step takes place. Remember, in your 'Cohesion and Coherence' section of the marking, the examiner is looking to see you have used linking words. Sequence markers are the type of linking words you need to use in a report describing a process. Do not forget to use a comma after sequence markers.
Examples: first, next, after that
Before you scroll down the page, see if you can identify the passive forms and the sequence markers in the example answer. There are 11 passive sentences and 7 sequence markers.
This report will provide a summary of the process that is used to mark examination papers in Someland. This process is divided into two parts, as the writing test is dealt with differently to the listening and reading tests.
The steps for the marking of the reading and listening tests are quite simple. Firstly, they are collected, and then, they are marked by an administrator and finally, they are collated.
However, the process used for marking the writing paper is much more complicated. First, the writing papers must be collected and next, they are marked by an examiner. After that, the results are sent to both the administrator and to the examination board. The actual writing exam answer papers are also sent to the examination board so that they can be reassessed to make sure the results are correct.
At the end of the process, the papers are stored for future reference.
